2014 Student Leadership Institute Lab: The Red Cross and International Humanitarian Law
On April 12, NVC organized a workshop with 30 students from the Student Institute Lab on community service and social justice. This workshop focused on the Red Cross and International Humanitarian Law, also known as the "laws of war" under the Geneva Conventions. Students learned about the Red Cross' work and how it provides humanitarian assistance not just in times of natural disasters but also in times of war and conflict particularly when people become displaced from their homes either internally or as refugees in another country. Many students with a military background were able to see the application of these humanitarian laws from the "civilian perspective" and even had an experiential activity designing a refugee camp. Students left the workshop with a greater understanding of human rights and humanitarian law and while being confronted with difficult ethical and moral questions about nationalism, patriotism and the willingness or unwillingness of nations/peoples to offer humanitarian aid or not based on self-interest instead of just doing "the right thing." |
